2026 PU Leather: A Complete Guide to What It Is, Its Composition, Manufacturing, Uses, Advantages & Disadvantages
Table of Contents
What is PU leather ?
Polyurethane leather, PU leather, artificial leather, or synthetic leather is a leather-like material made by coating a base fabric with polyurethane (PU) resin.

What Is PU Leather Made Of ?
PU leather is a multi-layer composite material. It is made up of a surface finish layer, PU surface layer, PU foaming layer, base fabric layer, and cushion layer(optional for some applications).

How Is Traditional PU Leather Made?
Traditional PU leather (polyurethane synthetic leather) is made using one of two main processes: wet process or dry process (transfer coating).
Wet-Process PU Leather
As someone who's worked in leather for 20 years, let me explain it plainly: previous-generation PU leather is usually made with a solvent-based wet process. The core of it is DMF solvent being displaced by water, which causes the PU resin to coagulate into a micro-porous structure — giving it breathability close to real leather.
Here is the wet-process production flow:

Dry-Process PU Leather
The dry process doesn't rely on water for coagulation. Instead, multiple layers of PU film are coated onto release paper, laminated to a base fabric, and then the release paper is peeled away to form the leather. This gives a smoother, finer surface that better replicates real leather grain.

What Is PU Leather Used For?
Thanks to its soft feel, leather-like look, and wide range of colors and textures, PU leather is used across many industries.
Furniture & Upholstery
Automotive Interiors
Fashion & Accessories
Apparel & Footwear
Bags & Cases
Stationery & Books
Advantages of PU Leather
PU leather has become a mainstream synthetic leather material thanks to a few key strengths.
✓ Soft Feel
Compared to PVC leather, PU leather is usually softer and feels closer to natural leather.
✓ Leather-Like Appearance
Different textures and surface finishes can replicate the look of many natural leathers.
✓ Wide Design Range
Color, grain, sheen, and thickness can all be customized to fit different products.
✓ Strong Value
Compared to natural leather, PU leather is easier to price competitively, which suits large-scale production.
✓ Easy to Process
PU leather is easy to cut, sew, and laminate, making it suitable for furniture, automotive, and fashion applications alike.
Disadvantages of PU Leather
PU leather also has some drawbacks. It is generally less durable than PVC leather, and the surface may oxidize, crack, or peel over time. This has long been a concern for buyers. Traditional PU leather can also cause more pollution during production, which raises environmental concerns.
What Is Next-Generation PU Leather ?
Next-generation PU leather (solvent-free PU leather) is a synthetic leather made with solvent-free polyurethane technology. It's produced without organic solvents such as DMF (dimethylformamide) — instead, the leather coating forms directly from a two-component polyurethane reaction (polyol + isocyanate). It's completely odorless, and it's also a type of vegan leather.
- More eco-friendly: lower VOC emissions, no risk of DMF residue
- Safer: meets US and European environmental regulations
- Closer to real leather in feel: soft, elastic, and breathable
Currently used mainly in automotive interiors, furniture, footwear, high-end bags, and other eco-friendly leather products.

Traditional PU Leather vs. Next-Generation PU Leather
| Performance | Traditional PU Leather | Solvent-Free PU Leather | Advantage |
|---|---|---|---|
| Eco-friendliness & health safety | ⭐⭐☆☆☆ | ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ | Solvent-free PU |
| Safety | ⭐⭐☆☆☆ | ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ | Solvent-free PU |
| Hydrolysis resistance | ⭐⭐⭐☆☆ | ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆ | Solvent-free PU |
| Breathability | ⭐⭐⭐☆☆ | ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ | Solvent-free PU |
| Cost | ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ | ⭐⭐⭐☆☆ | Traditional PU |
Traditional PU leather's main advantage is cost. On nearly every other measure — eco-friendliness, safety, hydrolysis resistance, breathability— it falls well behind next-generation PU leather.
